Dana Y. Matthews, PhD., PCC-S, LSC, NCC
Dr. Dana Y. Matthews is a supervising licensed professional clinical counselor with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision with a specialization in Consultation from Walden University. Dr. Matthews’ experiences in education have afforded her a unique expertise with the issues of young people today as well as the most effective techniques and methodologies utilized to work with adolescents and adults. As a highly educated and skilled counselor, her knowledge is an extraordinary complement to her intuitive ability to connect with and reach those young people struggling with issues pertaining to their mental health.
Dr. Matthews began her post collegiate career in education as a middle and high school Spanish teacher. Her work with adolescents as a teacher further spurred her interest in working with students in a more personal capacity. Dr. Matthews attended graduate school and received her Master’s degree in School Counseling and began her career as a school counselor working with middle school students, parents, and faculty as well as administration. Her interest in education led her to assist with the founding of a local charter school where she worked as an assistant principal for grades K-8th. As a result of her work in schools, Dr. Matthews has a keen knowledge of educational structure and administrative policies around mental health practices that are in use by schools today.
Dr. Matthews wanted to help adolescents and adults in a clinical setting; therefore, she completed her clinical coursework in community counseling for her professional counseling license. As a professional counselor, her initial clinical experience included working in community mental health where she provided outpatient mental health counseling services to children, adolescents, and adults experiencing diverse mental health disorders. During her tenure working in community mental health, Dr. Matthews also worked on child/adolescent clinical treatment teams.
Dr. Matthews has presented at national counseling conferences and she has served as assistant professor taking pride in training the next generation of counselors! Dr. Matthews also consults with individuals, school districts, and mental health facilities as well as hospitals to assist with clients’ academic/behavioral issues and overall psychological well-being.
Dr. Matthews currently holds licenses as a supervising licensed professional clinical counselor, licensed school counselor, and national certified counselor (LPCC-S, LSC, NCC).
Dr. Matthews considers helping others a privilege and an honor.
